Tori's Top Tips: A Smokey Eye

Last week, I wrote a detailed step by step tutorial for a smokey eye. It was SO detailed that I thought a briefer top tips could also be useful for those who are fairly confident with a smokey eye but want to refine it a little more. A smokey eye is my ALL TIME favourite makeup look on myself and over the years, I've picked up 4 top tips to help me achieve the look I want as the latest in my series of posts on Tori's Top Tips.

The darker the eyeshadow, the smaller the brush

As your shadow gets darker, you want it to take up less space in your crease so that it doesn't end up looking like you've been punched in the face. I have a range of makeup brushes that decrease in size that I can use to blend increasingly darker shadows into my crease.

A brushes work is never done

Don't think that because you've put that first crease colour down that you can put that brush away. You need to keep going back to previous brushes to blend out the edges of eyeshadows. This way, your colours will blend together seamlessly.

Dot and blend

My favourite way to achieve a smokey eye is to dot my darkest colour into the outer V, then blend it around the outer V and into the crease a little bit. Repeat the dot and blend until you've got the look you want!

Don't worry about the mess

You can always clean up any misplaced shadow or fallout with a makeup wipe. Swipe from the outer corner of your eye to the end of your brow and you'll have the perfect angle! Alternatively, you can place a piece of tape in the same angle before applying your shadow which gives a really crisp line. And if it ALL goes wrong, use the DHC Olive Oil Infused Cotton Buds* to clean up.

Tori's Top Tips - Cleaning Makeup Brushes

I know, I know. Brush cleaning. A makeup lover's worst chore. Yet there's nothing better than a perfectly cleaned brush is there!

So I'm here to share with you a top tip that I've learned over the MANY years of cleaning brushes...

Tori's Top Tips - Applying glitter nail polish

Picture the scene. You're in Boots, browsing the aisles when out of the corner of your eye, a twinkle sparkles from the shelves. It's a glitter nail polish...and you NEED it.

You get it home, open it up and paint a coat to realise that you've been fooled again. One coat of this polish leaves you three specks of glitter and a whole load of gloop. It's resigned to the back of the makeup drawer where dodgy products go to die.

Until now. Get out that glitter polish! I can teach you how to apply it so it sparkles like the goddess that you are!

Tori's Top Tips - Cleaning Candle Jars

I don't know about you, but I always get given candles as gifts and many of them come in jars. I love candles and the jars are often very pretty. However, once the candle has burned down and melted at the bottom of the jar, what do you do? I also get given lots of tealights and need holders for them.

This first "Tori's Top Tip" is how to remove the wax so that the jar can be reused for tealights and lone candles.
