Haigh Hall Courtyard

As regular readers know, I love exploring my local area to find new things to do, places to go and food to eat! Haigh Hall Courtyard is one of my favourite places to while away an afternoon, the perfect end to a pleasant walk!

Haigh Hall Woodland Park

Haigh Hall itself is a country house in the middle of Wigan, once owned by the Lindsay family until it was sold to Wigan Council. It's a Grade II listed building currently being converted to a hotel and is surrounded by parkland. It is free to access by foot or you can travel and park there by car for a very reasonable price. Our favourite thing to do is to park near to one of the entrances and walk through the parkland, along the canal and eventually meandering over to the courtyard for a drink and ice cream.

Haigh Hall Courtyard

Haigh Hall is currently benefiting from a massive overhaul with considerable investment and part of that has been the Courtyard. The Courtyard used to house some council buildings and offices but has been renovated into a regional food and drink destination. The Kitchen Courtyard now houses a wide selection of artisan producers.

Inside the Courtyard you will find:
  • Philip Davies Artist who exhibits his work, creates his art and runs workshops and classes on a whole range of genre, including children's crafts. You can also have a children's party with him.
  • Courtyard Cafe and Tearoom who offer a refreshing range of drinks, food and even a celebration afternoon tea including prosecco. They source many ingredients from local suppliers.
  • Two Left Feet Brewery which I have never visited but from their info, seem to brew cask beer and lager which can be drunk alongside beer tapas. This sounds really similar to Hawkshead Brewery which I wrote about in March 2016.
  • AM Flowers who are a local florist that have done the flowers for a few weddings I have been to. I ADORE their window displays.

  • Cook and Foragers who are a farm shop offering produce from organic veg to rare breed meat.

  • Luisco Chocolate who are a chocolatiers that have the most irresistable smell coming out of their shop. Their chocolate can be completely personalised catering for a range of dietary requirements.
  • All You Knead who are an artisan bakery and my favourite place to grab a coffee (and a cake or a pie...) after an amble through the park. You can also hire filled picnic baskets from them which I am definitely doing soon!

  • Holdens Ice Cream Parlour which does unicorn ice cream. Need I say more?? Holdens also run the ice cream van on site and have a vintage ice cream bicycle that can be hired for events. I've also just spotted that they do ice cream classes - where do I sign up??

Haigh Hall Facilities

Although this post is mainly about the courtyard, I simply must mention the other facilities that are available at Haigh Hall.

You can play a round of golf on the public 18 hole golf course...or play Adventure Golf  (18 holes) with the kids or even Foot Golf (9 holes) as a different variation!

Furthermore, there is a large, clean and very well maintained Adventure Play area with different areas for different sized children. Add to that a high ropes course which always seems popular, you could have a full day out here without ever venturing into the woodland park!

There's a miniature railway that snakes around Haigh Hall and the woodland park as well as miles and miles of well mapped trails snaking through the woodland. Last time we went for a walk, we stumbled across a herd of pigs, happily snuffling away in their enclosure.

Added to that, there are some formal gardens that you can use to escape the hurly burly of the adventure play areas and all in all, I think Haigh Hall offers something for everyone! There's also some kitchen gardens that have limited opening times.
