Ten essentials for a Slimming World cupboard

I've followed Slimming World for years, on and off, and I know that when I stick to the plan and attend the meetings, I can lose and then maintain a healthy weight while still enjoying my food.

With that in mind, I thought I'd share with you ten essentials for a Slimming World cupboard (or fridge...or freezer!)

Freezer Essentials

Frozen Vegetables and Fruit

One of the key elements of Slimming World is having 1/3 of your plate as speed food with every meal. This is designed to boost your weight loss while still allowing you to have the portion size you are craving.

I find that bulk buying fresh vegetables is not cost-effective for me and I end up with a lot of waste so I always make sure I've got a bag of frozen mixed vegetables as well as bags of separate vegetables such as sliced peppers, mushrooms, spinach etc.

Top tip here - the value bags of frozen vegetables are better than the supermarket own range in my opinion - they're filled with broccoli, carrot and cauliflower to bulk them out whereas more expensive bags have lots of peas and sweetcorn - which are NOT speed food...

Frozen berries make a fantastic topper on warm porridge with a drizzle of honey (1 syn for a tbsp) or served with Greek Yogurt and some crushed meringue for a low syn pudding. If you pop frozen berries in Tupperware with Greek Yogurt, they sweeten the yogurt as they melt and so at lunchtime you have a fruity yogurt with no added sugar or nasty sweeteners. Also, frozen berries, sugar free cordial and ice lolly moulds - hello summer!

Meat/Meat substitutes

I always have some 5% lean mince (chilli, spaghetti bolognaise, meatballs, burgers...), chicken thigh fillets (tray bakes are life!) and some salmon fillets in the freezer. That way, I know I can open up and there's a good range of meats or fish that I can create a meal with.

Store Cupboard Essentials

Dried pasta and rice

Dried pasta, not fresh, is free to eat on Slimming World and it's always worth having a bag in the cupboard to knock up a quick and easy side dish or main meal. Ditto for rice. I always have long grain and arborio rice in because risotto is life.

Chopped Tomatoes

Chopped tomatoes are a Slimming World essential! Syn free, speed food and a great base for pasta sauces, curry sauces, to make baked eggs or a chilli! I always buy the basics versions of these too - 30p a carton and I've got the basis for loads of different meals.

A range of spices and herbs

This really come down to personal preference but dried herbs and spices are free and can add the flavour to a meal that is lost by leaving out the fat. My personal favourites are Smoked Paprika, Dried Chilli Flakes and an Italian Seasoning.

Tuna

Or other tinned fish... This can save your life when suddenly you've run out of everything fresh. Nothing to go in a salad? Add tuna! What about a baked potato? Add tuna! Pasta bake for dinner? Add tuna!

Sugar Free Jelly

Sometimes the sweet craving is REAL! I always have a few sachets of sugar free jelly in my cupboard so I can quickly make up some individual jellies to eat when the sweet craving hits after dinner. For only 1/2 syn per serving, they really take the edge off for me.

Fridge Essentials

Yoghurt/Quark

I'm personally not a massive fan of Muller Lights which are so heavily promoted by Slimming World. I find them overly sweet. I do like some fat free Greek yogurt or quark though, which I eat with fruit and sometimes a crushed meringue. I also use quark as a cream substitute in dishes like my Baked Mushroom Risotto

Water

I'm not precious about my water being bottled - straight out of the tap is fine for me. I fill up a jug, place it in the side door of my fridge and enjoy it straight up or with some sugar free cordial if my sweet tooth rears its ugly head.

Eggs

Without getting into the "should you keep eggs in the fridge?" debate, I always have and so they're in this section.

Eggs are a wonder food. I use them for omelettes or baked eggs if I'm trying to save my Healthy Extras for my dinner. An egg cracked into a pan of mash will thicken it up and make it creamy without using any butter or cream - just beat it in thoroughly! Eggs are the staple of a good spaghetti carbonara sauce made the traditional way (so much less calorific than the cream laden version!).
