5 ways to: Log off

I've decided to start a new series on my blog - the 5 ways to...  This week, it's 5 ways to log off.

Recently I've been trying to have a couple of logged off nights a week. Blogging and work can take over my whole evenings until it seems as though my fingers can tap out an imaginary blog post or tweet in my sleep! It becomes habit forming to spend each night attached to an electronic device so, while it seems counter productive to blog about it, here's my top five ways to log off and refresh.

#24daysofwren Christmas Gingerbread Cake Recipe

I've really been getting into the festive spirit recently and along with my festive spirit comes a festive appetite. One of my favourite Christmas recipes is gingerbread cake. Nothing beats my mum's gingerbread cake - it's dark, sticky and oozing with childhood memories. I grabbed the recipe from her and gave it a go...

This blog post is part of Wren's #24DaysofWren advent calendar posts so check out the link to see what everyone else has created :)

You can find the advent calendar of everyone's lovely ideas over at the Wren Kitchens website

Caramelised Onion and Bacon Crustless Quiche

In an attempt to kickstart my Slimming World journey *AGAIN*, I've been scouring the web for delicious recipes I can adapt to a Slimming World approach. This Caramelised Onion crustless quiche is one of those recipes.

Crustless quiche is a Slimming World staple but often made with cottage cheese which I loathe. I've sacrificed healthy extras here for milk and cheese but you could use cottage cheese instead of the milk if you desired. The whole quiche uses 5 Healthy Extra A choices but easily cuts into 10-12 pieces which would be 1/2 a Healthy Extra A each or 3 syns. Your choice.

  • 300ml skimmed milk (1 x HExA, or just less)
  • 90g Gruyere cheese, grated (3 x HExA)
  • 30g Cheddar cheese, grated (1 x HExA)
  • 6 slices smokey bacon, cooked and chopped (fat cut off, you know the drill!)
  • 2 large white onions, sliced
  • 5 eggs, beaten
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Nutmeg (about 1/4 tsp, or a sprinkle if you're rebellious like me)
  • Frylight
  1. Caramelise your onions. I spray a pan with Frylight and add the sliced onion to it on a medium heat for 30 minutes. If it looks like it's getting dry, I add a splash of water which adds some moisture but also deglazes the pan a little to add the caramelly flavour.
  2. Mix the eggs, milk, cheese, bacon and seasoning in a dish. (I mix my eggs, cheese etc in the dish I'll be cooking in, sprayed with Frylight first, but that's because I'm trying to minimise washing up!)
  3. Add the onions to the mixture once they're caramelised.
  4. Bake (Cook?) in the oven until it's set - I cooked mine on 200oC for about 35 minutes before I checked it for a set.
  5. Let it cool and eat with plenty of salad!
Cue some shoddy food photography, haha!

Onions caramelising

Bacony, eggy, cheesy, milky goodness

I take my quiche for lunches at work when I want something more than just a salad. I also sometimes eat it for my breakfast if I want to save my Healthy Extra B for my dinner (Dr Pepper pulled pork on a bread roll = heaven!)

Do you make Slimming World quiche? What are your favourite fillings?

Have a beautiful day, inside and out

Alphabet Dating - B - Bonfire Night

Mr T and I are onto the second date of our Alphabet Dating adventures. You can read all about A - Amusement Arcades here. It seems a little out-of-date now, I really should have written this post up sooner, but our B date was Bonfire Night! I hadn't been to a bonfire since I was a student so I was ridiculously excited to do this!

Lush Review: The Experimenter

All (or practically) beauty bloggers love Lush and I'm no exception. I plan my Lush baths with almost military precision and woe betide anyone who disturbs them! My latest Lush bath used The Experimenter bath bomb, a new one for me.

Does setting spray work? Urban Decay Setting Spray | A Tori Test

I'm coming to the end of my setting spray and wanted to write about my great great love for it! I wouldn't be without this stuff and it breaks my heart to have to start rationing it now while it's running out!

Basically, this product does what it says on the tin (well, bottle but who am I to mess with a saying!)

It sets your makeup and makes sure that it DOES NOT MOVE.

I'm the first to admit, I was doubtful. I was skeptical. I didn't believe.

I was wrong.

Just look! I tried to use setting spray on only one swatch but that's harder than it looks. So on the left we have a swatch which was half covered with setting spray and half not, on the right a swatch fully coated in setting spray. The results speak for themselves. I swatched the eyeshadow quite hard, sprayed the setting spray on one (and a half) swatches and left it to dry. Then I rubbed my wrist, vigorously. The quality of the eyeshadow used (Makeup Revolution!) means that it stayed on with or without the setting spray but there's no denying that the setting spray made a massive difference. In fact, I struggled to wash the eyeshadow off in the shower after this photo had been taken. (Cue some awkward questions from my colleagues..!)

Now I've just got to re-purchase the setting spray so I'll never be without!

Do you use setting spray?

Have a beautiful day, inside and out

Cyprus - some October sunshine

I recently spent a week in Cyprus, a favourite place for my family and I to holiday. We always stay in Paphos which is in the southwest of the island. In legend, it's the place where Aphrodite rose from the sea.

Birthday Goodies

It was my birthday at the end of October - my favourite time of the year. I really enjoy spending time with my friends and family so birthdays are a great excuse to get everyone together. However, this year, I was also really really spoiled by everyone! I got some great presents from everyone so thought I'd share them with you now.

Alphabet dating - A - Amusement Arcade

Mr T and I heard about alphabet dating a little while ago and thought it sounded like a great idea! The idea is that you do a themed date for each letter of the alphabet. You try and do a date every fortnight and it ends up being a year's worth of dates. It seemed like a really good idea to make us try new things rather than stick with going for a meal or to the cinema!

Mr T went away and made a massive list of all the things we could do. I added my own ideas to the list and then we both underlined our favourite ideas. Where we chose the same thing, we plan to do that. Where we chose something different...we'll have to compromise! Thinking of the ideas was SO fun and we thought of so many that we could alphabet date 2-3 times over.

Our list keeps getting bigger and bigger but we decided to make a start with amusement arcades.

I've never actually been in an amusement arcade and Mr T knew of one in Southport where you changed your money into old pennies and played on authentic vintage machines thus satisfying my history geek side as well.

There were tonnes of different machines to go on - horse racing, coin pushers, fruit machines...all you could think of! We changed £1 each into pennies and chose our machines.

After that, we walked back up the pier and headed into a more modern amusement arcade to have a good old game of ice hockey (and enjoy the hall of mirrors!) Mr T easily beat me...grrrr!

The amusement arcades were so much fun and we probably only spent around £4 playing on the different machines. I even won twice - a packet of sweets and 10p on a 2p machine!

As we strolled around we also noticed crazy golf. It's years since I played a game of crazy golf so we decided to have a go. I even managed a hole in one!
You also cannot visit Southport without having a pink and white ice cream - childhood nostalgia in one mouthful! I sent pictures to my mum and dad - such memories of visiting as a child!

I loved our first experience of alphabet dating - the day was something we would never normally have done! For B we're planning on attending a local bonfire and fireworks display -again, something we've got out of the habit of doing as we've grown up!

Would you try alphabet dating? What suggestions have you got for B?

Have a beautiful day, inside and out
